How Dental Insurance Works

Every dental insurance plan is unique, but it is pretty common for PPO plans to work something like this:

Many plans also enforce a deductible, a waiting period before you can use certain benefits, and an annual cap on the amount that the insurance will pay for approved services.

What Is the Difference Between Dental & Medical Insurance?

While dental and medical insurance both care for your health, medical insurance has a very general scope. It covers things like trips to the emergency room, annual physicals, and management of chronic and acute diseases. It does not typically apply to routine oral health services.

Dental insurance, on the other hand, does cover routine oral health services. It has a strong emphasis on prevention, so it provides robust coverage for basic services like biannual cleanings and checkups.

In some cases, there is slight crossover between dental and medical insurance. For example, they may both apply to some types of oral surgery.

Use Your Benefits without Restrictions

If you have a PPO dental insurance plan, you can use it at virtually any practice, regardless of network status. At an in-network provider, you might end up paying less out of pocket. However, it is important to note that insurance companies often enforce certain standards of care for in-network providers, and those restrictions are not always what is best for patients!

That is why our practice has chosen to stay out of network — we truly want to provide top-quality care without restrictions! However, we are still insurance-friendly and will be happy to assist with the claims process. You may be surprised by how much you can save without compromising the quality of the treatment you receive.
